After an outdrawn and grueling voting process, the draft resolution 1.4 was finally voted through. The success of the Security Council in coming to an agreement seemed to hang in the balance when both Russia and the US initially did not vote in favour of the resolution, but in the end it was accepted. The full text of the resolution will soon be available on the blog.
Three unfriendly amendments are going into vote before the draft resolution 1.4 can be finally addressed and voted for.
Russia delivered an angered speech following a discussion in the Security Council on their intervention in the Georgian conflict.
The russian delegate raised concerns over what they considered hypocrisy on the side of the US delegation and referred to the violation of international law that the invasion of Iraq constituted.
During the last formal session, several delegations expressed their very pleased about the “constructive dialogue” and “the high level of cooperation” within the Security Council. They emphasized the ability of the delegates to reach an agreement.
However, the Russian Federation precised that it will not “remove [its] peacekeeping forces if [it is] not assured of the security of people in the conflict area”.
France claimed to be opened to any further discussion concerning Human Rights document which may be included in the final resolution.
